the white lodge

This is the white lodge, a place where I like to go and be one with the wonder, the beauty and the peace. Modern life is a busy life, there is so much going on in the world and it is overwhelming to the senses, the disposition and the constitution. It has been very important to my artistic practice to make an effort to get out of the studio and explore the world around me. The white lodge is where the elders live, it is the place where the eagles soar, and the ravens play. In its winter coat the white lodge sparkles and the air is crisp. I come to here to fill myself with its energy and replenish the soul, and give the heart much needed nature time, so it can recharge and gain strength for this crazy world we humans have created.

Happy Winter Solstice, here is to the Sun and longer days, looking forward to the sun baths in the studio as I journey onwards with my current body of work. It was an interesting year, as it winds down I reflect on a great year of art and travel, time spent with family, and new friends made. Gone is the old as I empty the backpack and lighten the load, and prepare myself for what the new year has in store. This year I learned to not fight destiny and to persevere in grace, and to ride the waves and be ready for a few sets on the head, yew!

SLO skull

Let’s talk about peace. Well it seems there can be no peace without there also being noise, navigating through this conundrum with paint brush on hand has done wonders for my soul. I am by no means a conventional artist, and money and fame has never been the driving force, it’s nice when it comes but it is not reliable and certainly does not create the work. I go to a special place when I paint, there is layers of life to get through before I can find that flow and rhythm, once there it is a dream, smooth, calm, quiet, silence yet loud as spirit roars.

💧  I am just one drop in an ocean, keeping in mind that this produces ripples, that than travel far distances, growing into giant swell, which eventually create massive waves as they hit land. So the next time you feel small, you are, you’re life, one giant wave.

Thought I would take a second and post some of my minimotions up for your viewing pleasure. These are a few of my one minute videos I put together spontaneously for Instagram, without overthinking things, and for the fun of it. I have been combining studio sesshin SLO mos and timelaspe footage with Nature footage. I work in the film industry from time to time, which takes me to stunning locations, which I usually gather timelapse footage for content, and I go to B.C. Interior and spend a lot of my time chasing around eagles and gathering timelapse and video footage there as well. Before my life as a painter I was passionate about film and have made sure to keep my passion up for the motion picture by making these minis, along with my experimental soundscapes. The advent of digital technology and innovation has made it possible to make a motion picture experience, however it is the content that makes the experience. It is quite amazing what one can do with very little, one iPad and my feet, hands and I suppose my eyes and ears…. anyway for now sit back and enjoy my little creations.

there is a place I like to go

  I could settle for trends, or copy other styles….I have thus far chosen not to go down that path, for better or worse, it is something I have managed to bypass. This can make it difficult when it comes to my work being accepted in the now, it takes time to develop a style, it takes patience and perseverance to overcome doubt and the fear. It is imperative to not give in to these factors, and have faith that somehow it will work out. It is also a good idea to get out of the studio from time to time and recharge the soul, the mind, and the heart space.

There is something to be said for slowing things down and letting things happen, everything happening just as it is supposed to without interfering the natural cycle, and allowing the artist within to be 

still frame from minimotion me going at it in the studio

These are some panoramas of a place I go to in B.C. to disconnect from city life and remind myself that there is a whole other world going on, this place, this planet, provides us with so much and yet there are some who want to continue to do harm in the name of economy, and growth, with little to no plan for the consequences which you and I will pay for. So I am grateful for these moments, when it’s just me and the eagles, the clouds, the water, sky, and the trees, and all of the sounds, the wind as it dances though the trees, the sounds of ravens free falling, oh what a gift, so I come here and pay my respects, because there’s no guarantees it will last.
